i am mulatto and i decided that i'd want to name one of my children after a place in africa. i thought about savanna, sahara, safari, egypt, or of kenya, for girls of course, but even those names seem to be common these days. i want a unique name. i like Seychelles (say-chell-is) for some reason and it is a city in africa i forget which country but as long as it is a place in africa it will do. ehat do you think?

Seychelles (please dont be rude)

I think Savanna and Sahara are beautiful names!

Or you could name her in African?

Irene

Lindley

Sabie

Ulundi

Byrne (for a boy or girl?)

Is there a way you can find out what country or region of Africa you have links with? That way you can research girls' names used in that area, and maybe choose one that way.

I think that would be a better option than choosing a random African placename, personally.

Funny enough, the capital of the Seychelles (islands) is called Victoria ;) And Victoria is also the name of Africa's largest lake. Great name but probably not what you're looking for.

And Sierra Leone is the name of an African country.... both Sierra and Leone/Leona are actual names, but again, maybe too common for you?

For fun, here are some suggestions of placenames that may work:

Luanda (Capital city of Angola)

Praia (Capital of Cape Verde)

Niamey (Capital of Niger)

Malindi (city in Kenya)

Tiya (city in Ethiopia)

Harper (city in Liberia)

Kadoma (city in Zimbabwe)

Lomé (Capital of Togo)

Mara (small river in East Africa)

Shebelle (river which flows through part of Ethiopia & Somalia)

Tana (river in Kenya)

Didessa (tributary of the River Nile)

By the way, make sure you check out the literal meaning of any placename you're considering. Khartoum, for example, means "elephants trunk" :)

Also if it's a river/lake name, research its condition. You don't want to name a child after a river that might be extremely polluted or something.

Savanna, Sahara and Kenya are really pretty names !

and they reflect africa too.

Safari and Egypt are really nice names if you ask me,

but most people might take on the names too literally if you know what I mean?

Oh my gosh !!

Seychelles is a gorgeous name to be honest!!

Especially for a baby girl .

Sorry but I think it is a bit too unique.

I like Savanna and Sahara.

Maybe you could use names associated with the country, not just the places. Such as for Egypt you can use, Isis (egyptian goddess) or clep (from cleopatra)
Baps .

They're not a city...they're a nation composed of a whole bunch of islands. They're in the Indian Ocean northeast of Madagascar (which is that great big island you see off the east coast of Africa).

Me, I'm not sure about that name. Bit odd for a baby name, IMHO, but of course that's just me. Here's a list of African girl baby names...not all place names of course, but there are some good names on here.

The internet is full of lists of African baby girl names, so if you don't find a good one on this list, just google and you'll find more.

Its hard to say unless you see the pronunciation in parentheses... Remember as a 5 year old, they have to spell it.. Plus other kids will be mean if they don't like it...

It's pretty and unique, but its going to be a pain in the butt for her, because other people are going to mutilate it.

Teachers. Office staff.

My name is Kelsey and it gets torn apart all the time..

You have to remember, she's going to have to learn to spell it by the time shes 6 or 7, and that is one long, hard name to spell.

But, since it has a good meaning, and if you like it, then use it.

But try making it a bit shorter, like SeyChell or Chella, and name her that.

Whatever floats your boat. :D

I found these names of African towns and cities:

Mellila

Praia

Kinshasa

Kigali

Asmara

Abuja

Lusaka

Luanda

Essaourira

Douala

I think its great that you want to give your baby a name associated with Africa, hope you find the perfect one! xx

I don't like this name at all, I'm sorry.

If it is pronounced Say-chell-is, she will get made fun of a lot in school. "Say-chell-is ugly" another says "Chell is ugly"... I think it would make for a rough time in school.

Savanna is nice and normal...or you could do Johanna (Johannesburg). I would not to Seycakdfda or whatever its too confusing.

Instead of Safari, have you thought of Saphera? (Sa-feer-uh)..

Very pretty, one of my favorite names.

Other than that if that isn't your style, Kenya is a very pretty name..
