Question:
What do you think of this interesting girl's name I heard the other day?

Sophina.

I had never heard it before, and thought it was really interesting when I saw it on TV the other day. To me, it almost seems like a combination of the names Sophia and Seraphina. I love Seraphina, but I've never really cared for Sophia much. So I'm semi-surprised I sort of like this name!

I searched for it on my favorite baby names website (www.babynamesworld.com) and Sophina was not in their database. So I googled it and found it here (http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/girl/sophina), where it says: "A borrowing from the Greek, Sophia is directly derived from sophia (wisdom, skill). The name has been in common use in England since the 17th century, when it was bestowed upon the infant daughter of James I."

So, what are your thoughts on this name? Have you ever heard of it before now?

Thanks! :)

I haven't heard it before now, and I actually love it!

I have never really liked Sophia because I don't like how it sounds, and I love Serafina but feel it's a bit too flamboyant. I would have chosen Seraphine as an alternative to Serafina, but I don't really like how Seraphine sounds either. But Sophina has that perfect balance which I love! The only downside is that it does sound like a nickname/diminutive of Sophia, and she will probably get called Sophie instead of Sophina. I love Sophie though, so it won't be a problem for me.

I love Sophreana too (and it's actually an existing name), except that I don't like how it looks and never managed to figure out how to spell it in a way I like.

How interesting!

I've often wondered if there was an alternative to Sophia and Seraphina! Someone else pointed out that Sophia is too common and that Seraphina is too flamboyant... I agree completely with that, and took Sophia off my list as a middle name, and did so too with Seraphina because neither had a balance which I liked. Sophina appears to have that balance. Although, the history behind the name wouldn't be apparent to the majority of society so I would assume "people" would be inclined to think it was a made-up name chosen by a woman who wanted to be kree8tive, but felt Sophia wouldn't do her need for attention any justice... I know I thought that when I saw someone asking about the name Sophiana!

I do really like it! It's feminine, exotic and has a lot of class about it too. As of now, I'm thinking about adding it to my guilty pleasure list!

Nope, this is the first time that I've heard of this name. Now, personally, I prefer the name Sophia and I've never really cared much for Seraphina. I'll have to admit, Sophina is definitely unique but it's just not something I'd ever name my kid. I prefer Sophia but don't get me wrong--Sophina is still very pretty

Julia asked about it the other day, I really like it. That's probably due to the fact that I love Sophia but I think it's too common. Sophina is a nice twist on the name.

I love Sophia [I have ever since I watched Golden Girls], but I'm not very fond of Seraphina. I do like Sophina though. It looks and sounds kind of elegant.

I've never heard it before. It is cute, though (:

I grew up with a Sophina! We went to camp together. She's Greek-American.

I think it's an interesting name, though because I never really liked this girl, the association is a turn-off. Without thinking of the girl I grew up with, I think it's pretty. It *is like a combination of Serafina (too much) and Sophia (too common).

I've never heard it before. It's very pretty though! I love most names ending in the "eena" sound. They're so feminine and lovely. The only downside to this name is that it would probably get confused with Sophia a lot.

It sounds to me like it could be a diminutive in Italian for Sofia/Sophia. Angelina is a nickname for Angela, Chiarina is a nickname for Chiara, Adelina for Adela, Giannina for Giovanna, Rosina for Rosa, Nicolina for Nicola, etc. I could be wrong though, because there would probably be more info on it if it was. Sofia is the Italian spelling, so it would probably be spelled Sofina if it was a diminutive.

Interesting name! Never heard of it. As for liking it... I don't think it flows as well as Sophia.

I like the name Seraphine (without the "ah" sound at the end). I had an ancestor with that name, which is how I first heard of it.
