Ralph- RALF or RAYF?

Question

My husband's name is Ralph so we've agreed that will be our son's middle name. My husband's name is pronounced RAYF, the Old English way, but we're unsure whether to say RAYF for our son or RALF. I know RALF is the more common pronounciation but then he won't really be named after my husband.

What do you guys think? No rude comments please.

My brother's name is Ralph, pronounced RALF. I actually prefer the RAYF pronunciation though - it's more unusual, and I prefer the sound of it. If your husband's name is pronounced RAYF and you both like the pronunciation, then I'd stick with that - it doesn't matter if other people don't know how to pronounce it. For a start, it's his middle name so it won't be used that often anyway, and also you can always correct people. I think it'd be a bit weird to pronounce the name differently if you're naming him after his dad. :]

It's a middle name so you can pretty much do what you want. In the States, the name will generally be pronounced "RALF" because that was the Scandinavian way of pronouncing the name and Ralph was a popular name among Scandinavians in the early 20th century. If your family tradition is to use the British pronunciation, then use that instead.

I would go with 'RALF' only because it's more common. I think Ralph being pronounced 'RAYF' is uncommon enough that he would have to constantly correct people on how to say it.

I agree with Ralph, its easy to pronounce, and kids wont make fun of him later for having a unusual name.

I went to school with a boy named Rafe - maybe you could use that. It's a form of Ralph :)

My opinion would be to stick with Rayf so he will be named after your husband. It doesn't matter what others think... stick with what you both like and what has more meaning.

I prefer RAYF, but it does look as if it should be pronounced RALF.

I'm used to seeing RAYF spelt Rafe ...
