I think Artemis and Athena wouldn't be too out there, look at what other people name there kids. But you should consider nicknames to call them and also a more general middle name that way when they get older if they don't like it they can go by a middle name.

Artemis: Artie

Athena: Nina

Artemis Jacob

Athena Charlotte

BQ - I think Athena is perfectly fine to use. Artemis is a bit out there, but not nearly as strange as some names I've seen. I'd prefer it as a middle name though.

I don't think the name Athena is too out there. A girl I went to school with had a younger sister called Athena, and they were in no way greek/italian. I think its a pretty normal name.

Artemis on the other hand is very out there. Firstly I wouldn't be sure if they were male or female, and secondly Artemis is the goddess of chastity. Not something I'd want to be named after.

The problem with naming your son or daughter after a Greek/Roman God is that most people know those gods and goddesses. And they will tease your child about not living up to the name.

Kids get teased about their names all the time anyway, even regular common names. Much more so, when it is an unusual name. Better to name a daughter with an unusual name than a son ... because research shows the teasing over an odd name has much more of a negative impact on a boy than on a girl.

Good parents have the well-being of their child foremost ... why would you pick a name that is going to get your child teased? Especially since the only reason for picking an unusual name is all about our own pride and ego.

As upcoming parents, now is a really good time to start putting your needs second to the needs of your child.

if it is a boy, Apollo.

if its a girl, Hera

both are gods that represent strength, and have modern and practical names.

whatever you do, DONT use dionysus/bacchus. they are gods of wine and pleasure(sex), which is pretty inappropriate for a baby.

also, im not saying no, but hades/pluto is to the greeks/romans that the devil is to us, so....... um...... keep it in mind

Apollo is actually conmon to both Greek and Roman pantheon.

Juno is the equivalent of Hera.

I like both as it happens.

I used to work with someone called Dionysus (who was female) - she clearly never liked it as she never used it.. Miost would appear pretentious if used as modern children's names.
2012-05-21 06:24:21 UTC
My daughter has a (half Greek) friend called Athena. It's not particularly unusual.

The only other one I'd even consider is Diana.
