Question:
Is Mesa a good name for a baby girl?

I have always thought that mesa's are so beautiful and awe inspiring, so when I was thinking of girl names during my last pregnancy (had a boy), I decided on Mesa. But everyone I told that to (esp. my mom, and my m-in-law) acted like it was a bad name (they freaked out, actually). Now we are ttc again, and I am thinking of names. I still like Mesa, but I don't want to name a little girl something that everyone else thinks is dumb! So is it a good name or should I be thinking of something different?

I actually think it's very pretty. Quite unusual and I love names that are unique like this! Not that there's anything wrong with Mesa, but you could also play around and spell it differently...like Maysa, Maesa, or Meisa...maybe something that looks a little more feminine.

It must be difficult to like a name that your family doesn't care for, but ultimately you have to think about the fact that this is YOUR child, not theirs. Maybe traditional names aren't your thing and you should just let them know that you want your child to be a unique individual and her name to represent something that you find beautiful.

Good luck!! :)

Just out of curiosity, do you have a middle name to go with it?

By the way, do people not realize that the word mesa is not pronounced like messa, but mey-sah?

Ok so my name is actually Mesa. And yes i am a girl. People mispronounce it a lot. People call me table allllll the time. But people who dont think of it as table think it is a very pretty and elegant name. I get many compliments on it.

It sounds pretty, but it is just too silly of a name. Can you find name with similar sounds? Also, remember that the *child* will be "beautiful and awe-inspiring" by herself...so don't detract from that with a foolish name like Mesa. Sorry!

How about naming her after an artist who painted mesas? Or a photographer who photographed them? Even a town with a pretty view would be a better choice.

Good luck!

I believe Mesa is Spanish for table. Nobody can pick the name but you

Mesa means table in spanish and it's also a last name. I really don't like it at all. There are so many other pretty names you can use. This one is just not one of those. Sorry.

What other names do you like or have in mind??

Edit to add: If it's pronounced Maysa than you should spell it like that bc mesa is pronounced just as it is spelled me-sa.

Maysa, Meysa or Maesa would work for that pronunciation you like.
.pokey.

If you like tables.

I live in Arizona though so I have a bad connotation when I hear "Mesa" I think of Mesa, Arizona which is lame.

But it's your child and nobody else should name him/her for you.

Mesa is also a city/suburb out of Phoenix, AZ.. I like it as a city name, but not on a child.

Mesa actually sounds really pretty! And I love the thought you put behind the name.

Generally I'm not one for kre8tive names, but Mesa works really well. It's not too frilly or over-the-top, and has a really nice earthy feel to it that's absolutely lovely.

To try to appease everyone else, you could also try to go with a more traditional middle name. Mesa Elizabeth would be gorgeous.

Good luck!!

Whenever I ask a question, even if its the easiest one, nobody can give me a proper informed answer here. what happened to people who really take the time to write an answer?

I actually like it. So what if it means table in spanish or is a city in Arizona. People name their children Dakota or Riley. Riley is the name of a military base in Kansas. Riley is a popular name that means rye cleaning. http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com/meaning_of_Riley.html

Don't listen to the nay sayers. I think it is pretty and original. Not many people like Sunday Rose either.

Love it! It is a very beautiful name and I immediately think of nature and free open space. I would definitely include it as a middle name if not a first. If your m and minlaw hate it so much they can call her Masy.

Since Mesa means table in Spanish, maybe you should spell it different like Maasa, Masa, Maysa, Maesa, Maisa, Meisa or Meysa. . .

It is up to you what you are going to name your child. It doesn't matter what your family thinks. It is you decision!

I like the sound but not the spelling since it means table. . .

Would you name your daughter "table"? "Mesa" means "table". While it might sound pretty, that doesn't make it a great name. I remember an episode of Friends, in which "Janice" is discussing names she and her husband were choosing for their daughter. She wanted to name her daughter "Treblinka". While it might sound kind of pretty, it was a Nazi death camp.

So, it's up to you, but I would choose another name.

It sounds like messy or mess.

I am not a fan, personally

But, if you love it, that's great! It feels really good when you find a name you love!

My suggestion is that you use it as a middle name. People can be as creative as they want with their children's middle name, because hardly anyone every sees them.

Good Luck and Best Wishes,

I don't know where did you get the idea.

It means "table" in spanish, and it is pronounced like "mess up"

Think about her and if she will like it in 10 years.

I won't take it but it's up to you.

Good luck!

its a good name its short and nice.. and who cares if they dont like it.. its your kid.. so its your choice.. however if you are concered then you can always have a middle name so when she grows up she can choose what she want to be called..
