It's the Russian nn for Alexander and makes perfect sense despite what the first answerer said. Now I think it's rather refreshing since most Alexanders go by Alex but another matter is whether it's "manly" enough (there are a lot of girls with the name Sasha out there) and whether it will stick. Basically when the kid goes to school it's quite possible everyone will call him Alex anyway. In that sense I don't think it makes much sense planning for nicknames beforehand, they just tend to happen but of course you can choose what your family will call him though. Sasha is alright, other less common nicknames are Lex and Alec. Xander is fun too, but that may too long for a nn. Alexander is a great name btw and it goes great with James.

It´s contracted from Alek - sandar This Sandar becomes Sasha or In female version Sandra - Sasha it sounds softer and therefore it´s used as nickname.

Love it! I can't believe it's on a boy, I normally see it on a girl (ick!) nowadays. And yes, the name

Sasha for Akexander DOES make sense. Sasha is a Russian nickname for the Russian name Alexander. It makes sense in Russian with the Russian spellings.

Go for it :)

I'm really not seeing a connection between Alexander and Sasha. Plus, Sasha sounds quite feminine to me; I had to re-read the question to double-check that it wasn't Alexandra! I don't like the sound of Sasha either; it's really not working for me...

Other nickname ideas:

Alex

Lex

Al

Xan

Xander

Andy

Ander

Lexan

EDIT: Kris ~ Oh, I did not know that! Learn something new every day. :)

So, I guess that changed my answer just a little bit. I now see the connection, but I still really do not like it!

I like it a lot! For those who are wondering how you get Sasha from Alexander - Sasha or Sacha is a Russian nickname for it (for both males and females: Alexander/Alexandra).

I like all of the names and nicknames, though my favorite for Elizabeth is Betsy.

I don't see how you got Sasha from Alexander...

Also, Sasha Alexander is the name of the actress who formerly starred on the show NCIS.

Also, Sasha is very feminine sounding to me.

I have to agree, that isn't really a nickname that relates. It's the name of an actress- Sasha Alexander. Just because people call Richard Dick, doesn't mean they should.

That's what Naomi Watts has shortened her sons name to.

I have a friend whose name's Alexander & he gets called Sandy...

My friend's nickname is Sasha and her name is Aleksandra. I think it's a Russian/Ukrainian thing.

Sasha is a great nickname for Alexander.

...but Ellie is not the nickname for Elizabeth. Its the nickname for Elinore. The nicknames for Elizabeth are: Eliza, Lisa, Beth. Bess, Bessy Betty.

That makes absolutely no sense. How did you get Sasha from Alexander? The only similar letter is A!

Try Alex or Xander.

(edit) I didn't realize Sasha was a nickname in another country. Now I feel so culturally insensitive. Sorry bout that.
