Jon is the only one I know of, or maybe Jonny... none of those you mention are "usual" abbreviations for Jonathan.

Yep all those nicknames work, as well as Joey and Jonny and Nate and Nath. Most Jonathan's are naturally called John, but if you decide you want him to be called Nathan, just introduce him and call him Nathan and other's will catch on. Jonathan is a great name for a birth certificate, "proper" name, etc!

Congrats & good luck

I believe I can offer some official insight... Jonah = no. Jon = Yes. Nathan... YES. Nathan is actually a shortened name of Jonathan, not Nathaniel. Jonathan means "God has given" in Hebrew and Nathan means "He has given." It's the same name with different spelling and pronunciation. :-)

I have only ever heard the nickname Jon, Jonty and Jonny used for Jonathan. Based on the way the name is spelled, all of the nicknames you've proposed seem like they'd work perfectly well for Jonathan. You could also shorten the Nathan nickname to Nate.

My only concern is that the name Jonathan is pronounced JOHN-ə-thən in English speaking countries (in German the name is said as: YO-nah-tahn). There is no stress on the last two syllables of the name, and so the 'nathan' part of Jonathan sounds like nə-thən rather than NAY-thən. The same logic is used with the nickname Jonah.

If you want to use Jo as a nickname the boy version is spelt Joe. Traditionally the shortening for Jonathan is Jon but you can use what you like

Nathan isn't. John could be. Jonah and Jo no.

I agree with Jessie, they can be nicknames if you want them to be. They're all part of the whole name so it's not like it's a stretch at all. I don't see why you couldn't call him Joe, Jonah, or Nate/Nathan.

Not normally - but you can use anything you like as a nickname, it doesn't have to be a standard short version of their real name.

They can be if you want them to be!!! They are all cute nicknames for Jonathon, but most people don't even think of them, they just use Jon or Johnny!!! Nice job!
