Ive heard it all. It is soo wierd people mispell it because i have NEVER met a Melissa with any of the above spellings.

Wow, really? I have never misspelled the name Melissa, I agree with you, it is such a simple name to spell! Melissa is the only spelling that actually looks right, the other ones looks silly and totally misspelled. I don't really see how anyone would think any other spelling looks right. The only way I would ever spell it is Melissa. But then again -- People do spell their childrens names like Mkynnzi now, so I guess it is just a bit confusing for some people, ha.

How Do You Spell Melissa

My daughter's an ice skater, and I feel so sorry for the kids with "unique" names who have to skate out on the ice smiling, right after the announcer has stammered through a mangled approximation to their name and they can see the judges struggling not to laugh. Children are special all by themselves. I don't understand why any parent would want to make their child unique by giving them the stupidest name in the class. Sure, it's unique...but who wants to be unique like that? Oh, and it's "Nevaeh it's heaven spelt backwards", not "Neveah" :D

The study of phonics is no longer taught in this country.

In addition, proper pronunciation is no longer stressed or corrected.

Melissa MUST have 2 "esses" to obtain the correct pronunciation. Phonetically, one "ess" results in Melisa meh-LEE-sa.

People who spell the name with an "a" aren't listening to the pronunciation. With an "a", the name is correctly pronounced MAAL-lissa instead of MEH-lissa. That could be regional or could just be laziness.

I have had the misfortune to meet a Malisa whose parents pronounced it as Melissa.

They are the kre8tiv and yoo-neek types who wanted Melissa to be "different". What they got was a frustrated kid who must continually spell and pronounce her name. She's considered a spelling change when she reaches 18. I'll probably give her the $$ as a birthday gift.

I've never even thought of it being spelt any way other than Melissa. Some people have very strange ideas about names.

I once heard of someone named Melissa receiving a card from their aunt who completely butchered the spelling of their name: Millesa.

Seriously, what is so effing hard about spelling such a common name correctly?

I suppose if people had never grown up with a Melissa around them, it would be confusing. I would probably spell it Mellisa at first and then realize that it looked wrong and spell it Melissa.

That's weird. Melissa is the only way I've ever seen the name spelt, and it's the only way I would ever spell it! :]

OK, this question is totally for me. Not only do people insist on writing my name as Mellisa/Mellissa, they also love to call me Michelle. Like in class, my teacher (of 2 years): Michelle? Michelle???? *stares at me* Me: ?
