Question:
What do you think of the name Mesa (pronounced "May-sah") for a baby girl?

I'm new here and thought I'd throw this out there. Naturally we know the word mesa means "table" in Portugese or can be referred to as a geographical location. But I also found that the Sioux translation is "blessed," and although I'm Irish her father has strong Native American roots (not Sioux however). I do wonder if the teachers will get it right in roll call (accidentally call her Miso or something) and she'll get made fun of... or if kids will refer to her as "table" and give her a hard time. I'm thinking perhaps put an accent mark over the E to help with pronunciation but beyond that, will she have a hard time growing into this name?

I'm asking because the hubby is stuck on this name he thinks he "made up" and he loves Mesa Elizabeth (which consequently, will give her the initials MES... kinda cool since that's the 1st 3 letters of her name). Apparently there were only 25 baby girls named Mesa in 2009 so I do like the uniqueness of it. I always thought I'd name my first girl Isabella after my great grandmother but thanks to Twilight, it's uber trendy, and although I do love it, I'm not sure that I really want to go there.

Just wondering if you guys think she'll love her own name? People become their namesakes so to speak, and I just want her to be her own amazing person and love everything about herself.

Thanks so much for your input! Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated. I'm due any day now and having SUCH a hard time with this daunting task so if you have a different name you'd like to throw out there that you think we should consider I'm all over it! :)

I'm afraid I don't care for it. He didn't make it up, its a geographical feature meaning a high tableland. Lots of locations in the American SW are labeled Mesa such as Mesa Verde. If you want a tribal name there are lists you can run through: http://www.20000-names.com/female_native_american_names.htm But I suggest you find an M name the meaning of which you like and go with that. You can search this site by meaning: http://www.behindthename.com/

When I first saw it I just thought Mesa - as in table, pronounced Meh-suh. I honestly can't see how Mesa could be pronounced May-sa. But I am Aussie.

Maysa is a lovely sound, but the spelling just doesn't seem to fit it.

Finding a name is so hard! I am finding it impossible. names I love are

Aria

Aleah

Sage

Jayla

I like Mesa and as long as you acknowledge that it also means 'table' in other languages (Spanish too) and aren't completely oblivious to it's other connotations its a good name. I like Mesa Elizabeth. I also like Mesa Isabel. I also like the name Maizah [may-zah], it sounds similar, but without the 'table' connotation, just a thought.

Mesa is really pretty and I think she will grow into it. When you're young with a name that's different than everyone else it's hard to love your name, but once she's an adult I'm sure she'll really like it.

It would probably be mispronounced alot spelled that way. She'll probably sometimes be called Mee-sa (which isn't too bad) or Mess-ah (which does sound kinda bad). And no one really likes having to correct people on their name. If you both love the sound of the name and want to use, maybe just spell it Maysa which looks a little more feminine anyway and would be pretty easy for most people to pronounce it correctly.

My family is East Indian and American teachers and classmates are NOT forgiving of a unique name. The choice is beautiful, how about changing the spelling? How about Mehsa, Meysa, or Meisa

I don't really like it, but what really matters is if you like it and if you think that the child would like it.
